The Power of the Pivot

I recently started officially homeschooling my last child. I knew going into this school year, that teaching my daughter would be different. She is a free spirit. Loves the the outdoors and is driven by HER ideas.

Despite knowing all of this, I had clear laid out plans for our daily lessons. She let me know after our first “official” school days of 2019, that my plans were not up to her standard. She stared at me straight faced and said mom today was no fun. Neither of us had any fun. There was stress on both ends. I knew that all I had planned would need to go out the window. I would need to pivot.

But… I didn’t want to! It would require more work and intention. Homeschooling multiple children can be draining some days. So the thought of allowing my daughter and her interests to take the lead seemed a bit too much. Yet in still, I transitioned. And let me tell you; Some where along the lines I remembered the simplicity of the beginning of my homeschool journey 7 years ago. How much fun and free flowing the early were. Creativity and excitement found its way back into my lessons. Even into the environment with my older two boys. My simple short lessons with my daughter have been so fruitful for her and I both. My home environment during our lessons is much different.

IS it according to my plan? No. But guess what. That is ok. Sometimes plans hinder and bring more stress. If my daughter is teaching me anything it is that life is an adventure to be enjoyed and explored.

When we pivot from what is expected to the unexpected we feel uncomfortable at first. But if we allow ourselves to embrace the moment and change we are given a gift. The gift of joy. The gift of the present moment and all that it has come to teach us.

This lesson is beyond homeschooling. This is life. The art of the pivot is powerful. When we pivot freely and flow into each moment we welcome peace and joy into our space.

In what ways might you need to pivot? Don’t be so attached to the plan you lose your power to adjust. As the seasons have changed once again, allow your life to move and change as needed.

Affirmations: Today, I will allow myself to enjoy every moment as a gift.

Affirmation: Change is beautiful.
